How To File and E-Return

The Home Page is the default page seen when accessing the Internet website for e-Filing of Returns.The central area of the page contains the major announcements. The Left Navigation Bar of the page focuses on the various ITS Forms (Form 1, Form 2, Form 2F, Form 3, and Form 3B).On the Right hand side, there is a provision for a One-Time Registration of a New Member, while just above it is the Login provision for Registered Users. Registration of Members is free of cost. User has to register only once and can use that Id and password for further years as well.

On clicking on any of the Forms on the Left Navigation Bar, the options for that specific Form will be available for reading and can be further clicked to get detailed information.
The example shown in this image is the set of options available when clicking on the link Form 1. Clicking each option here will open the details associated with that option.
The options are
Overview: Giving a brief overview related to ITS Form 1.
Who Should Submit this Form: Brief details about who is eligible to submit the selected Form.
Downloads: Opens the page from where downloads specifically for Form 1 are available. These include the Client Side Utilities for Form 1.(You must be logged in to access this)
FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions
Help: Tips and Assistance on e-Filing Form 1
Submit Your Returns: This leads to the page where the validated XML e-Returns file needs to be uploaded. (You must be logged in to access this)
What about the Other Services?
Other Services like find your PAN, find your TAN, Print Challan etc. are still available here on this website as a service from this website.In order to access the same, user needs to Click Other Services in the Top Navigation Menu of the website and click on the required Sub-Menu. The image shows the Sub-Menu’s available at this point in time which can further be clicked on and detailed information can be taken.

Relevant Laws and Rules relating to the Efiling of Returns

- Vide Notification No. 128/2006, dated 1-6-2006 S.O. 848 (E), Form 2F was notified.
- Vide NOTIFICATION NO. 189/2006, dated 24-7-2006 Forms 1, 2, 3, 3B were notified
- Vide Notification No. 253 of 2004, dated 30th Sep., 2004 S.O.1073(E), Electronic Furnishing of Return of Income Scheme, 2004 was notified for efiling of returns:
- —-An eligible person may, at his option, furnish his return of income which he is required to furnish under sub-section (1) of section 139 of the Act for the assessment year 2004-05 and any subsequent assessment year, to an e-Return intermediary.
- —-Digital signature, e-return, e-return intermediary were defined in this scheme

What is e-Filing?
1.The process of electronically filing Income tax returns through the internet using the government secured website is known as e-filing.
2.It is mandatory for companies to submit the Income tax returns electronically for AY 2006-07 and onwards.
3.As per the directions of Incometax Department, any company return submitting without a e-filing receipt should not be accepted
4.E-filing is possible with or without digital signature (digital signature can be purchased from the government designated offices.
Types of e-Filing
There are three ways of filing returns electronically:
Option 1: Use of digital signature where no paper return is required to be submitted.
Option 2: File without use of digital signature where paper return has to be submitted with which the efiling acknowledgement number is required to be submitted.
Option 3: File through an e-return intermediary who will do e-filing and also file the paper return on behalf of the taxpayer with which the efiling acknowledgement number is required to be submitted.
